What type of visa should I apply for?

All foreign nationals, including children, require a visa to enter India. The only exceptions are nationals of Nepal and Bhutan who can enter India without a visa. (Note: Nepalese nationals need a visa if entering India from China). Validity of the visa begins from the date of issue. Foreigners coming from or through yellow fever countries must have a valid vaccination certificate.

Tourist Visa

Tourist visa can only be granted to a foreigner who does not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sightseeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives, etc. No other activity is permissible on a tourist visa. Please note the validity of the visa is effective from the date of issue.

Please note: As per the rules and regulations set by the High Commission of India, the Visa Advisory informs that there should be a 2 months gap from your last exit from India on a Tourist Visa.

Business Visa

This type of visa is given those who are doing business in India such as making sales or establishing contacts on behalf of a company outside of India. Business visas may be valid for three months to one year or more with single or multiple entries. However, the period of stay in India (for each visit) under this category is limited to six months only. Please note the validity of the visa is effective from the date of issue. Those who are applying to work for an Indian company should apply for an Employment Visa.

Urgent Business Visa

The Indian Consulate has introduced a Fast Track System for urgent business visas to enable business travellers to travel at short notice.  This is restricted only to those who are doing business such as making sales or establishing contacts or urgent business meetings.  (It may not be applicable for all applicants, eg non-UK residents).

Please note: In order to use this service, applications must bethe day before and the visa will be ready after 3pm on the next working day (permitted all documents are correct/complete).

Employment Visa

An Employment Visa is granted to those who are an employee of an Indian company / or those who intend to do honorary work (without salary) with Registered NGOs in India. The Embassy/Consulate may grant Employment visa valid for a limited validity irrespective of the duration of the contract. Further extension up to 5 years could be obtained from MHA / FRRO in the concerned state in India. Please note the validity of the visa is effective from the date of issue.

Conference Visa

Visas for international conferences, or on certain subjects, as decided by the Government of India from time to time, can be issued only after clearance for the said conference is received from the Government of India. Please note the validity of the visa is effective from the date of issue.

Conference visas are issued for attending conferences or seminars in India. For participation in certain conferences, approval of the concerned authorities in India may be essential and would, therefore, require a longer processing time.
